Manny Machado, the third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, cussed out Fernando Tatis Jr. after a hard slide into second base during a game on September 23rd. The two players had to be separated by their teammates and coaches before things escalated any further.

The self-destruction of the San Diego Padres continues…

Another super-team is collapsing instead of thriving. The 2021 San Diego Padres acquired a plethora of talent in a deal with the Chicago Cubs, including starting catcher Victor Caratini and staff ace Yu Darvish. They also managed to trade Blake Snell to the Tampa Bay Rays, creating a strong starting rotation to match their bold starting nine, which features Fernando Tatis Jr., one of the game’s brightest rising talents. The only problem is that a team assembled in the offseason to win the offseason rarely translates to immediate success (see the 2015 Padres, this year’s New York Mets and their numerous failures [taunting the fans chiefly among them], 2012 Miami Marlins, and 2013 Toronto Blue Jays), and instead fails to make the playoffs.
After a verbal confrontation between third baseman Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. during the Padres’ defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, what seemed to be the year the Padres finally put everything together took a turn for the worst.

“It’s not about you,” says the narrator. Machado was heard yelling at Tatis, “You go play baseball,” and “Everybody knows you’re the guy.” After Tatis was struck out looking by Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright in the fifth inning, the Friars had to work together to keep the two superstars apart.
Since the All-Star Break, the Padres have battled tremendously. Originally expected to reach the playoffs, they are presently four games over.500 (currently behind the Cardinals) at 76-72, third place in the NL West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants; 2 12 out of a Wild Card berth and 20 12 out of the division they were expected to win.
So, what sparked the argument in the first place? What’s more, what caused the collapse? Fernando Tatis Jr. and his attitude, plain and simple. Manny Machado needs to be reminded that he’s the face of the organization, and if he gets out of his own way, he could be the face of baseball for the next 10-15 years, after watching many of his early errors play out in front of him with his close buddy.
The 22-year-old inked a $140-million, 14-year contract that would keep him in San Diego until 2035. It’s the third-largest deal in Major League Baseball history for a guy who has rewarded the Padres with an injury-plagued season that may change his status. He has spent a lot of time on the IR due to a left shoulder ailment, and he hasn’t played in a long time. It’s his catching arm and lead side at the plate (he bats and throws right-handed), thus it has a huge impact on his game as a shortstop and at the plate as a fence seeker. Fernando has failed to complete a full season in the three years since he was invited to the Show in 2019. (all stats care of Baseball Reference). His talent is enormous, but so is his ego; he’d rather do bat flips on a home run while trailing in July or arrange flings with the Pad Squad cheer lady that got Trevor Bauer into trouble than contribute as a teammate. Machado provoked the altercation after seeing a rage tantrum of a helmet slam during a critical game, which is a mirror reflection of his history.
The San Diego Padres have a bright future ahead of them; they may win the second wild card before the season is through. But only if the egos diminish and the job on the field gets done.
Manny Machado has been one of the best players in baseball for a while now. He is also known to be quite an interesting person off the field. One incident that happened between him and Fernando Tatis Jr., was when Manny Machado cussed out Fernando Tatis Jr. Reference: manny machado stats.
