REVIEW – Life is Strange takes us on a fresh journey filled with abilities, emotion, and adorable people. On this day, we play it as a full game rather than in chapters divided by time. Unfortunately, although the title is still amusing, the plot and narrative rhythm aren’t strong enough to pique our interest.
Alex Chen will go on an emotional and mysterious journey in Life is Strange True Colors. The next installment in the multiple-choice narrative adventure series introduces us to a never-before-seen heroine who has the ability to empathize.
Life is Strange: True Colors, the newest installment in Square Enix’s popular adolescent epic series, is distinguished from its predecessors by one feature: It was created at Deck Nine Games, which had previously released the Life is Strange: Before the Storm spin-off. As a result, the game departs from the original designers’ concept, Dontnod. It recounts the tale of Alex Chen, a young girl who has traveled to Haven Springs, a mountainous location, in search of her long-lost brother of eight years. But his life is cut short by a strange event, the darker side of which prompts our heroine to explore. She wants to solve the tragedy with the aid of a unique gift.
The Spring Colors of Heaven
Alex Chen is relieved to be dropping her baggage into the more welcoming walls of her brother Gabe’s apartment after a turbulent childhood spent in foster care. Gabe has moved onto the first floor of a tavern in a tiny mountain hamlet, distant from the city’s rush and bustle. We get a pleasant sense from the local environment right away. The layout of the area, which is full of little businesses and floral areas, is especially appealing. Its subtle textures are soon forgotten in favor of its more complementary and dazzling colors. It’s a shame that most of the buildings are closed to the public; nevertheless, this freedom is given to the locations where you must go. In addition, exploration is restricted to a huge lane of stores that makes up the majority of the city. The homes seem to be mysteriously missing.
Its beautiful ambient noises complement the welcoming ambiance of the surroundings, as well as Novo Amor’s charming melodies and a few licensed songs by Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, and Gabrielle Aplin. And, since Alex is a music fan, she sometimes offers us with excellent guitar tunes, dubbed by the musician mxmtoon’s honest voice. True Colors’ music isn’t exactly the most generous. Even yet, with its gentle, pop, and folk songs, it is always exciting and fits consistently in the musical core of the tale.
On the technical side, we just lament that the conversations have an irritating propensity to overlap and get jumbled up. There are a few sound and graphic issues, as well as some long loading times on PS4, but nothing that will ruin the experience.
Alex Chen’s sensitivity
Alex Chen’s history is still a lovely mystery at the start of our journey, revealed only in fragments from his journal and phone records. We do know, however, that he is plagued by what she refers to as a “curse”: his ability to detect and control other people’s emotions. Auras are colored, with red representing anger, blue representing fear, and yellow representing joy. However, the allure of this relatively adaptable skill comes in its capacity to disclose the ideas that accompany emotions, which may include secrets. And, when they’re especially acute, it’s possible to enter them and, for a little while, see the world through the eyes of our target. Let’s face it: the power utilized at every turn seldom impresses in terms of execution, and it’s never followed by major crashes or a dizzying lack of control. It does, however, provide its owner inherent sympathy and fulfills the game’s emotional goal.
With her self-conscious smiles and basic gestures, Deck Nine Games has created an appealing heroine. Alex is a responsible and devoted character who, as long as you allow her, works for the benefit of others, no matter how tormented she is. True Colors is known for having characters who are more or less carefully crafted. Because of the motion capture work done, they have believable and genuine face movements. If we leave behind a rather indifferent Ryan among Chen’s pals, we’ll be more captivated by Steph’s zeal, who will rightfully get her devoted DLC on September 30th. Although Haven Spring has a small population, each of its residents has their own little issues that are intertwined with yours. Then there are some who will function as nice side effects, hidden in the background. You may aid a guy in locating his dog or a novice ornithologist in a competition; your actions will almost always have obvious consequences.
An inquiry as well as a human journey
This episode, unlike the others in the series, does not follow the episodic structure. This is a choice that improves our overall experience while also allowing us to forgive some hasty judgments. It does not, however, prevent us from detecting rhythmic abnormalities and certain durations. As a result, the first chapter takes great care to establish its environment and characters, at the expense of a very linear stage whose triggering ingredient appears only at the very end. In general, the adventure enjoys languishing in its periods of reflection, with our heroine having the opportunity to engage in times of introspection; this is beneficial in providing more and more material to the character. However, although the game attempts to provide a rather complex human experience, the main inquiry is lacking in flavor, reversals, and simply stunning actions.
Similarly, the narrative fails to flow at times, but it does have a few strong moments. Some ostensibly moving scenes don’t always have the intended impact. Nonetheless, the narrative succeeds well in piqueing interest in the mystery behind the brother’s death and keeping the reader guessing until the end.
Exploration
Following the first chapter, the remainder of the game focuses on exploration, which we would have preferred to be favorable to a somewhat backward inquiry. Despite the freedom of mobility, the game often grabs our hands or is content with simple study. Reflection is emphasized on just a few instances. There are a few excellent concepts, such as this fun life-size role-playing game that takes us on a magical adventure.
Despite this, due of the prominent position it has, it inhibits the narrative thread from advancing. The stakes, like in the previous saga episodes, are raised by moral choices that are generous but not very significant. In any event, at the conclusion of each chapter, we always have the pleasure of reading the customary summary of our decisions and the routes not chosen. Each one may be replayed if you make a mistake.

The tenderness of Life is Strange: True Colors’ journey may be experienced, sublimated by dazzling colors, more accomplished animations than ever before, and lovely music. Deck Nine Games has decided to examine empathy from top to bottom in this episode, an element that is prevalent in the abilities given, the narrative, and the character creation. On a human level, the entire thing is a nice adventure, but it lacks a certain vivacity in its actions and narrative development. As a consequence, the inquiry loses a certain oomph.
