The password-free future has here. That is, at least, what Microsoft wants its users to believe.
Microsoft account holders may now completely remove their passwords from their accounts and sign in to applications and services using alternative ways like the Microsoft Authenticator app, Windows Hello, a security key, or a verification code delivered to a phone or email account, starting now. These alternatives, according to Microsoft, are much safer and more convenient than conventional passwords, which have grown increasingly susceptible owing to factors such as human nature.
[…] We strive to make things as simple as possible for ourselves. We often use familiar and intimate terms and phrases. According to one of our latest studies, 15% of individuals use their dogs’ names as password inspiration. Family names and significant events, such as birthdays, were also frequent responses. We also discovered that one out of every ten individuals admits to repeating passwords across several sites, and 40% claim they use a password formula, such as Fall2021, which ultimately becomes Winter2021 or Spring2022.
Unfortunately, although such passwords are simpler to remember, they are also simpler to guess for a hacker. Any hacker may get a head start on getting into someone’s personal accounts by looking at their social media profiles. When a password and email combination is stolen, it’s often sold on the dark web for use in a variety of attacks.
By downloading the Microsoft Authenticator app and connecting it to their personal Microsoft account, Microsoft account users may become passwordless today. Account.microsoft.com has a passwordless account option in the Security section of the dashboard (Security Advanced Security Options Additional Security).
