With the publication of The Many Saints of Newark today, the Sopranos content drought has come to an end, and it’s not over yet. David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, the greatest piece of media ever, has signed a five-year, first-look contract with HBO. He’ll be developing programs for Warner Media, which owns HBO, the network that aired The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007.
Chase will produce films and programs for HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Pictures Group as part of the agreement. Chase hasn’t said what kind of material he’ll be producing. However, it’s expected that an extension of the DiMeo criminal family, headquartered in New Jersey, would be on the table — with the ziti, of course.
“In the film and television business, David Chase is one of the most talented storytellers. HBO and HBO Max have had a long and storied creative collaboration with David, and this agreement gives us a fantastic chance to extend that relationship at HBO and HBO Max,” said Casey Bloys, HBO and HBO Max’s chief content officer. Chase has remained inactive since the black screen closed off the last episode of the 86-episode masterwork, with the exception of Not Fade Away, starring the late James Gandolfini.
The prequel The Many Saints of Newark, which was released on October 1st, has received mediocre reviews thus far. The influence of Richard “Dickie” Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) on a young Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini’s son, Michael). Ray Liotta, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, and Vera Farmiga also appear in the film.
According to the article in the New York Post, there are many unknown tales that helped Tony Soprano become the Mafia leader he is today. It’s hard to tell for sure without knowing precisely what Chase is thinking. After all, the guy has perfected television, so attention to detail will be crucial. It’s still as entertaining to see today as it was 22 years ago. The bulk of the original cast members are still working. However, there are far too many crucial portions missing (James, obviously), and the filming has been completed for over 14 years. That wouldn’t make sense unless the sequel is set in the distant future. Outside of the obvious tales, here are some intriguing concepts for purely speculative reasons:
- Finding out how Paulie Walnuts chose his haircut
- Understanding why Ralph Cifaretto was so enraged that he killed his 21-year-old stripper lover; apart from the fact that she was a whore. B, she smacked me.”
- Pie O My won how many races?
- Is it true that the Pine Barrens were ever developed?
- What happened to Vito’s homosexual club when he was apprehended?
- Could Tony have made it as a varsity athlete if he had worked hard enough?
- Is Ginny Sack’s 90-pound mole still on her backside?
Long-time admirers may have these concerns. Hopefully, this isn’t simply another heartless cash grab as so many others have been. But this is David Chase’s legacy, his child, and it’s difficult to watch him destroying the world he spent the better part of a decade creating. He is, nevertheless, a cunning individual. He was an interior designer who murdered 16 Czechoslovaks!
