Wasteland is a top-down co-operative action role playing game set in an apocalyptic wasteland. The original Kickstarter campaign was hugely successful, with backers receiving copies of the game for as little as $10 and up to $3500 USD. Wasteland’s developer, InXile Entertainment has since gone on to release two other games: Torment: Tides of Numenera and Bard’s Tale IV
“Apocalyptic golf” is a mini-golfing game that takes place in the wasteland. The objective of the game is to find your way through the courses without being hit by any of the obstacles along the way.
Golf Club: Wasteland, developed by Demagog Studio and published by Untold Tales, is a post-apocalyptic golfing game in which you return to Earth to play one final round of golf. Golf is a genre in which few developers dabble, since we’ve already seen a slew of golf simulators and a few mini-golfing games. Golf Club: Wasteland, on the other hand, has an emotional plot, a remorseful protagonist, and a radio station broadcasting from the planet Mars. We attempt to score some hole-in-ones on a post-apocalyptic world in our review of the PS4 edition of Golf Club: Wasteland.
The narrative of Charlie, a pilot who traveled to Mars to settle after the planet Earth was declared unsuitable due to climate change, is told in Golf Club: Wasteland. People are settling to Mars, leaving Earth abandoned and devastated, and it is now in a deteriorated state. Charlie, who has been attempting to settle on Mars for years, is lonely and heartbroken about leaving the planet, so he returns to play one more round of golf. This is the point at which you enter the tale and see what happens next.
The game has three modes to choose from, depending on how difficult you want the game to be. They are Story, Challenge, and Iron Mode. The Tale mode is the most informal, and it’s the one to choose if you simply want to relax and enjoy the story. Each hole in the challenge has a Par Value, and if you miss it, your game is finished and you must repeat the level. Iron Option is the most lenient mode, requiring you to redo the level if you make even one mistake.
You are immediately exposed to the game’s main principles as well as the game’s most intriguing feature, its music. You are listening to Radio Nostalgia from Mars while golfing on Earth. Apart from keeping you amused throughout the stages, this radio station plays an important purpose in the game. Each level may be thought of as a mini-golf course, with numerous dangers and tactics to avoid or employ in order to putt the ball. This is when you discover the game’s second amazing feature: the level design and stunning aesthetics.
Despite the fact that this is a post-apocalyptic game, the graphics are not overly high or demanding. Instead, they have a really peaceful sense. The level design is excellent as well, with the game taking place in a variety of places including demolished museums, national landmarks, and massive retail malls on the verge of collapsing. Each level makes full use of the surrounding surroundings, resulting in a truly fascinating golfing game that is both soothing to look at and tough to play.
The game’s plot is conveyed in three different ways, each of which is tied to your progress in the game. Every time you putt the ball in the hole, you unlock entries in Charlie’s journal. The more entries you unlock in each level, the better you play the game. These entries depict the world as it was during Charlie’s time on Earth, as well as details about Charlie’s life. The radio station is the second factor to consider. As you listen to Radio Nostalgia, you will learn about how Earth came to be destroyed and why everyone abandoned it to reside on Mars.
Last but not least, there are the levels themselves. While their names, descriptions, and many other things in the level inform you about how the apocalypse is impacting the earth and what happened to mankind in those specific regions, they are quite obvious in showing you what the present state of the Earth is. Humans leaving bags full of their belongings beside airports, shopping carts littered throughout malls, ancient monuments damaged by people, and wild animals roaming freely are all examples of previous activity.
The game offers a little visual indication for firing that provides you an idea of how strong your shot will be and where it will go. Unfortunately, there is no user interface, so you can’t see what the needed Par number for the hole in the current level is straight immediately. You may do so simply halting the game, and if you lose the ball, you will automatically get a new one. If you lose your Par goal on higher difficulties, you must repeat the level and perform everything all over again.
While the gameplay is enjoyable, I don’t believe it is the most efficient method to play golf. While the landscape is lovely, and shooting into a hole in a big hand hoisted high in the air by cranes is a lot of fun, the game does not adequately reflect the sport of golf. Your shots are seldom precise, and it either overshoots or undershoots on occasion. This is due to the fact that there is no way of knowing how far your ball will go. You may improve with some practice with the method, but if you’re a casual player, you’ll probably simply go to the next level without attempting to master a hole.
Overall, Golf Club: Wasteland is a lovely game with an original golfing idea. The gameplay is good, and the way the narrative is told is fantastic. Despite the game’s poor gameplay mechanics, I had a lot of fun playing it and viewing the various levels. I really like the game’s soundtrack, Radio Nostalgia, which is masterfully created and keeps you captivated to the game as it plays music, has conversation, and even educates you about the planet’s history. It’s a game that you should absolutely try out for yourself.
The Bottom Line:
Golf Club: Wasteland is a fantastic low-stress golf game with beautiful graphics. The game may be challenging if you want it to be, but I like playing it on narrative mode since you can sit back, listen to the radio, and take your time with the holes. The backdrop is lovely, the gameplay is interestingly tough, and the radio station is just delightful to listen to. You should be OK if you keep away from the insane Iron Mode. This is not the game for you if you want to play tough golf. If you want to experience good stories and play a game with stunning graphics, this is the game for you. This is mostly an arcade golfing game with a strong emphasis on stories and graphics.
8.0/10 for the overall performance.
