IBM has announced their latest quantum chip, the “Eagle,” which can be used to power a wide range of applications including AI and cryptography. The company expects that Eagle will find its way into gaming in the next five years.

IBM has revealed that it is the world’s first business to develop a 127-qubit processor, a day before its Quantum Summit 2021 keynote. Eagle is a revolutionary multilayer chip with a novel design. The processor’s precise quantum volume computing specifications are unknown.

According to Jerry Chow, head of IBM’s Quantum Hardware System Development branch, “our first 127-qubit Eagle processor is offered as an experimental system on the IBM Cloud to chosen members of the IBM Quantum Network.”
Multiple layers for the computing units and a single layer for the coupled qubits are present on the wafer. Classical computers, according to IBM, would need “more classical bits than there are atoms in every human person on the globe” to emulate the new processor.
“The introduction of the ‘Eagle’ processor is a significant step toward the day when quantum computers may beat conventional computers at meaningful levels,” stated Dr. Daro Gil, Senior Vice President and Director of Research at IBM. “Quantum computing has the potential to alter practically every industry and assist us in addressing the world’s most pressing issues.” This is why IBM is continuing to develop quantum hardware design, establish methods for quantum and conventional workloads to collaborate, and build a worldwide ecosystem that is critical to quantum computing adoption.”
