The Matrix franchise is an iconic series in sci-fi cinema. The films spawned a sequel trilogy and inspired countless other franchises, books, games and more. However, the story of Neo’s journey ended with some unanswered questions for fans to debate about for years following its release. Questions such as: “Who freed Morpheus?” “What happened after Trinity died?”
“Matrix 4” is a game that takes place after “The Matrix Revolutions.” The game has been released in the form of a trailer. Read more in detail here: matrix 4.
MOVIE REVIEW – “Neo lived, Neo lives, and Neo will live” is a famous Lenin statement that perfectly encapsulates the great return of the best Matrix, which returns with a contentious but undeniably stunning and attention-getting year-end cinematic extravaganza. Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne are no longer in The Matrix Resurrections, which is now directed solely by Lana Wachovski and starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss. Is this weird sequel a possibility – or even a possibility at all?
“I was at home when Lana Wachowski, the director and writer, texted me, saying, ‘How about another Matrix movie?’” ‘Oh, that sounds lovely, but I’m dead,’ I responded. ‘Really?’ he said, and I replied, ‘Go on.’ And he created a stunning screenplay and a fantastic plot.”
This amusing anecdote was recently given to the press by Keanu Reeves, who has grown into one of our generation’s greatest actors, now in his eighties, still portraying Neo 22 years after the first film, still in The Matrix, and most importantly, still alive and well. Okay, maybe flourishing isn’t the greatest word, since he is continuously haunted by images of living in a virtual world, where he seems to be different and is surrounded by illusions. However, there is a particular joke for us, the gamers:
Neo has gone on to become a video game designer and is the creator of The Matrix!
Yes, the same Keanu Reeves who is now the iconic protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077, which was released a year ago and is the sequel to the old franchise whose fame he owes to, which is now almost completely intertwined with his name and has always been (also) a kind of allegory of video games, is the father of the Matrix trilogy video game adaptation in the new story. In other words, in Neo’s Matrix, he has constructed the Matrix trilogy as a computer game, and everyone is in it, including himself and, of course, Trinity, whom Neo still loves. Is there anything more “meta” than this?
While Lana Watchovski (now single) allegedly revived the Matrix franchise because her parents died in 2019 and she wanted to at least relive her favorite superheroes at the time, this Resurrections is full of funny self-reflection and kicka-knocks, quirky (and also funny) or at the very least extremely creative and cleverly recurring old characters, and a central love motif that tells the story of Neo and Trinity’s big, repeated reunion (and its pitfalls).
“Mr Anderson!” exclaims the audience.
Despite what we witnessed at the conclusion of The Revolution, and what happened to Smith, Neo’s lifelong nemesis, and Morphes, the great master instructor, we learn from the tale that Neo and Trinity may have lived after all. The story is well written by Wachovski, sufficiently twisty, exciting, and relatively easy to follow despite its convoluted nature. Some of the explanations are pithy and funny, while others are a bit forced and hard to believe, but overall the story is well written by Wachovski, sufficiently twisty, exciting, and relatively easy to believe despite its convoluted nature.
Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne will be sorely missed. Yes, of course. We’re talking about The Matrix’s most famous performers and the roles they performed. But this Matrix isn’t the same, and casting Jonathan Griff as the ‘new’ Smith and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the ‘new’ Morpheus was a very deliberate (and, in my opinion, justifiable) move. Both personalities have been introduced into the plot in unique and interesting ways (despite the fact that they are no longer primary characters), and both performers do an excellent job portraying these two renowned people. (Especially Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who has once again shown his talent as an actor after the Hook Hands remake https://thegeek.hu/2021/08/26/kampokez-filmkritika/.)
Is the old Matrix making a comeback?
This isn’t the Matrix you’re familiar with from the film trilogy. The action scenes aren’t as big, inventive, or original as they were when the Watchovskys flipped the action movie business on its head. The action scenes were amazing and thrilling, but they paled in comparison to the extraordinary ingenuity of the first Matrix film, which was released twenty-two years ago.
We also don’t have the incredible soundtrack from the first film, where Dissolved Girl plays softly in the background when Neo wakes up, or when he meets Trinity in the nightclub where Rob Zombie’s Dragula and Prodigy’s Minefields are playing, followed by Marlyn Manson and other huge rock hits from the time. But, with the Prodigy vocalist having committed himself more than two years ago, Manson likely in a police cell due to his harassment charges, and the other icons of the past, where are all these rock artists now? It’s not Wachovsky’s fault, but renowned rock artists and songs of this caliber are no longer available, which is why the soundtrack in The Matrix: Resurrections is fundamentally poorer than in earlier installments (especially the first).
It’s not coming back, which is why it’s new.
So this Matrix isn’t “the” Matrix anymore, but Wachovski’s film is able to present something fresh – to amuse while also making you think. As we watch Hollywood films over and over again in a world full of sequels, reboots, and superheroes, as well as continually retconned IPs. A Hollywood where the simplest thing to buy and sell is imagination. Lana Wachowski, on the other hand, defies the stale mold by giving spectators something new, strange, and hilarious as hell.
I believe everything in this new Matrix is good: it’s innovative, inventive, amusingly self-reflexive, exhilarating, and tremendously entertaining, even if it’s not revolutionary in the traditional meaning of the term. You may have wished for Hugo Weaving, 22 years your senior, to exclaim “Mister Anderson!” (even “many times over”) and then beat the crap out of each other with Keanu Reeves as the camera spins around them, but I wanted a creative sequel like this, with new actors (as well as meta references), and an exciting story starting from a different point. Even though The Matrix Resurrections isn’t flawless due to its jumbled, disjointed plot, sometimes clumsy language, and one less snappy action scene, I still wanted a sequel like this, not a fourth time around. If you’re anything like him, you won’t be disappointed with the older Neo’s latest digital adventure (“Mr. Anderson!”).
