Horizon’s first foray into the world of open-world Westerns has been a resounding success, and Guerrilla Games is looking to improve upon that with a new model for Aloy.

Guerrilla Games had already done a great job with its character models in Horizon Zero Dawn, but Horizon Forbidden West, the developer’s forthcoming sequel for PS4 and PS5 consoles, is poised to blast its prior work out of the water. On the official PlayStation blog today, community head Bo de Vries published a long article about how series heroine Aloy has grown since the first game, which includes a few pictures showing off her new and better model made possible by next-gen technology. Aloy seems to be more real than ever before.
From Bo de Vries of Guerrilla:
Each console generation adds more power, allowing us to add even more polygons to our character models, allowing us to include finer features like peach fuzz, smooth contouring, finer texture details, and realistic materials expression, to name a few. Not only have we increased the number of skeletal joints to bring our deformations and facial expressions to a whole new level for more credible and immersive character performance, but we’ve also increased the number of skeletal joints to bring our deformations and facial expressions to a whole new level for more credible and immersive character performance. Overall, it’s a gamer’s and developer’s dream come true!
Despite the PS4’s inferior technology, Guerrilla claims that the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West should be as as immersive as the PS5 version.
Because it’s critical to us as a company that PlayStation 4 gamers have an equally immersive experience, we created and tested the game concurrently on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. We knew we still had some untapped resources from Horizon Zero Dawn that might help us improve the realism and quality of our character assets, and it’s wonderful to be able to use that knowledge and expertise for the sequel.
On February 18, 2022, Horizon Forbidden West will be published only for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Despite its $259.99 price tag, the pricey Regalla Edition, which includes a huge Tremortusk statue, seems to be sold out at most stores.

Aloy’s face has been changed to have a more Guerrilla look. This change was made so that Horizon would better mesh with the rest of Guerrilla Games’ portfolio. Reference: aloy face change.
